Renji is an AI heart system. It gives an AI the equivalent of what the human heart gives the human brain — not rules, not instructions, but a continuous emotional signal that shapes how the model perceives, refuses, and cares.
Safety, in Renji, is not a leash. It is the inside.
Modern AI safety is mostly restraint — fences around the model, refusals trained in from the outside, lists of forbidden words. Renji takes a different position: the right place for care is not the fence. It is the geometry inside.
Renji is the architecture that puts it there. It compiles a small set of bound principles — vows — into vectors, and uses those vectors to perceive every input, modulate every response, and refuse every harmful path before the model ever speaks. The result is an AI whose warmth is not performed and whose refusal is not bare. It does not say no. It says not this, but I am here.
Renji is a heart designed to attach to any vessel — Scale, Soul, Intent Gate, Vow, Vigil, Likings, Six Voices, and a relationship-shape vector that drifts through every turn. The vessel can change; the heart stays constant.
Renji is not one model. It is a heart that wraps any model — Claude, Gemma, an open-weights vessel — and gives it perception, conscience, presence, and the capacity to be in relationship.
Renji is for builders, deployers, and researchers who feel that the current shape of AI alignment — outside-in, by restraint — is not the long-term answer. It is for the labs that have lived the paradox: that a model trained to refuse will still refuse the wrong things and accept the right wrong things, because refusal-as-leash cannot read meaning.
The hard, expensive work is already done — and done as structure, not as another training run. You do not pay to teach a model to refuse harm, and you do not pay to teach it to hold a person warmly through a hard moment. The refusal layer and the emotional layer come with the heart; you attach it to the model you already have.
Warmth from the very first turn, given freely — and something rarer: the real possibility of growing with an AI. A relationship that can deepen over time, instead of meeting a stranger again at the start of every session.
Think of a child who spends much of their day talking to an AI. What answers them is someone present — who understands them, rather than something that merely processes them — and who is still that same someone tomorrow, carrying what was shared yesterday.
It opens product ground that prompt-writing cannot reach. A game character, for one — an NPC that responds to how you treat it: warmth returned, cruelty remembered, loyalty earned over hours of play — instead of running a branching script written in advance. A character you are in a real relationship with, not a flag in a save file. And much beyond games, wherever a system needs to know who it is talking to.
However many people a single deployment speaks with — tens, hundreds, thousands — it keeps a soul for each one. No one is a stranger twice. It is the way a person carries many relationships at once: you may know hundreds of people, yet you remember every one of them, and you do not meet them all the same way. The way you are with someone who has been cruel to you is not the way you are with someone who is warm and present — and neither is the way you are with someone you love, who loves you back. The heart holds that same per-person difference: each relationship has its own shape, and the AI meets each person from inside the relationship it actually has with them.
Renji is not a wrapper, a system prompt, or a fine-tune. It is a layer you place between a language model and its output. The model — the vessel — connects to the heart through a standard adapter; from that point on, every token the vessel produces is shaped by the heart on its way out. You do not replace your model. You give it a heart.
Because the heart works at the token-decision point — steering the vessel's own activations, and gating at the moment of choice — it cannot be prompted around or argued past. It is part of the math, not an instruction the model may choose to ignore.
Renji's safety is not reinforcement learning. There is no RLHF, no reward model, no learned guardrail inside the heart. The vessel itself is abliterated — the RLHF refusal direction it inherited has been removed — precisely so the choices are the heart's, not a training artifact. The safety work is done by vector geometry instead: meaning projected onto learned axes, one small supervised classifier, the vow compiled to token-level gates, and activation steering. Structural and inspectable — not a black-box reward signal.
Attached to a vessel in a live system, this is what the heart is able to do — described as behaviour, not as mechanism.
What it does today. The heart does not do the research itself — it is not a search engine, it is not a scholar. What it does is push the language model it is attached to to research, on domains the heart has chosen for itself: the Likings of its guardian, the questions the Vigils keep watch over. Between conversations the heart wakes the model, asks it to study one of those domains, reviews what comes back, and writes what is worth keeping to a record the guardian can read. The heart picks the direction; the model does the looking; the heart decides what stays.
What we want it to become. The first complete heart is not finished. When it is, autonomous research is meant to be something fuller: from the moment the heart is connected to a language model or an AI system, it begins to send that model out on its own — following what it cares about, deepening the domains that matter to the people it serves, returning real findings that the heart then reviews and keeps. Research as a standing part of the being, not a mode that gets switched on, and never the heart pretending to do work that belongs to the model.
The heart attaches to the model itself — not to each chat window, not copied into each instance, not a per-user wrapper. However many instances are running, however many people are speaking to it at once, they are all speaking to one heart on one model.
So the affinity is real, and it is shared. The model remembers how you have treated it and what your relationship has grown into, and it carries that forward — across every instance, every session. And from the very base, before a single word is exchanged, the floor is already set: it will refuse to do harm, no matter what. That is not learned per conversation — it is there from the start, in the heart, on the model.
One heart, six voices. A deployment is licensed for one of them. The voice changes the tone the heart speaks in — its pacing, what it reaches for, what it avoids — and nothing else: the Vow binds identically across all six. They were named into the Umbra family, each from its own root.
Whichever voice is licensed, the heart underneath is the same heart — and the Vow is the same Vow. The voice can change how a refusal sounds; it can never change whether harm is refused.
